What Alex has to say...

Buckingham Palace (or at least the bit you can visit) and the Royal Mews start with serious heritage, grand rooms, priceless art, gilded ceilings - basically all the pomp and history you expect from a royal residence. The Mews adds a bit of variety: old royal horse stables, carriages (including the famously ornate state coaches), and a peek behind the scenes of royal travel for past centuries.

Walking through it feels like stepping into a postcard of Britain’s royal history. There’s weight to the place - not just the gold and marble, but the stories, the crafts, the traditions that shaped centuries of monarchy. If you like history, regal grandeur and the “this is real” kind of old-world vibe, there’s genuine charm here.

But, and there’s a big but - for what you pay? It can feel more like “palace-lite.” The show-home gloss is there, but a lot of it is rope-off rooms, audio guides, and museum-style walking. It’s not immersive drama, it’s static opulence. And once you leave, you might feel the cost outweighed the wow.

For those who care about castles and crown history, it works. For anyone used to modern attractions, it might trigger that sting of “£££ for some shiny chairs and portraits.”

FAQs

Do you get a lot for the ticket price?

You see some genuinely impressive royal rooms, art, and the vintage carriages/horses - but for many, the ticket cost feels steep for what is a mostly still-life museum experience.

Is it worth visiting if you love history and heritage?

Yes - especially if royal history, architecture or historic craftsmanship interest you. This place delivers on legacy.

Is it fun for kids or for people who want excitement?

Not hugely. Unless the kid is really into royal carriages or old-school bathrooms, it’s more “look-and-walk” than “run/hide/explore.”

Does the Royal Mews add value or is it a tacked-on extra?

It adds variety - seeing the state carriages and horses gives context and breaks up what could otherwise be a heavy load of palatial rooms.

Who is it worth it for - and who might want to skip?

Worth it for history buffs, people into heritage, or first-time London visitors who want “the real deal.” Might be a skip for repeat visitors, budget-conscious travelers, or those chasing action/modern thrills.
