GTKA is one of those places you walk into and immediately think, “Yep… this is going to be a good day.” It’s an indoor tropical sanctuary packed with over 300 rescued animals - the fluffy, the scaly, the feathery, and the occasional “oh wow, that’s definitely staring into my soul.” Every creature here has been rehomed or rescued, so the whole place has this gentle, wholesome vibe rather than a big-zoo, conveyor-belt feel.
You wander at your own pace - no rush, no strict timetable, just pure “let the kids explore while I pretend I’m brave enough to hold a snake” energy. And that’s the best part: everything’s hands-on if you want it to be. Parrots, meerkats, reptiles, small mammals… they’re used to people, so you genuinely get those proper up-close moments that kids talk about for weeks (and adults secretly love even more).
The staff are brilliant too. They actually know the animals, not just the signs on the walls. They’ll happily chat, introduce you to whoever’s in the mood for attention, and subtly stop your toddler from trying to adopt a tortoise.
And because it’s all indoors, it’s the ultimate “weather can’t ruin this” day out. Rain? Doesn’t matter. Wind? Doesn’t matter. British winter? GTKA laughs in the face of British winter.
Perfect for families, brilliant for animal lovers, and one of those rare days out where you leave feeling like you’ve genuinely done something wholesome - not just ticked a box for the weekend.

Yep - it’s super family-friendly. Babies, toddlers, the whole crew. Under-2s even go free. Some of the bigger handling experiences are better for slightly older kids, but for general wandering and meeting the animals, all ages are welcome.
Yes. The whole place is on one level, easy to navigate, and has accessible toilets. Plenty of parents push buggies around, and wheelchair users won’t be battling any surprise staircases.
Most of the time, yes - if the animals are in the mood. Everything’s led by the staff and the wellbeing of the animals, so some days they’re up for cuddles, and some days they’re having a “don’t talk to me” moment. Totally natural.
There’s a small snack bar selling drinks, crisps, ice creams and a few quick bites. It’s not a full café, so if you need a proper meal, bring something or grab food nearby before or after.
Most families do 1–2 hours, but it’s very “go at your own pace.” You could breeze through, or you could hang around chatting to the staff and bonding with a gecko for half the afternoon. Your call.
