Lindisfarne, also known as Holy Island, is one of the most enchanting places on the Northumberland coast. Only accessible when the tide recedes, the island feels like a world of its own - peaceful, historic and beautifully untouched. As you cross the causeway and make your way onto the island, you’re stepping into a landscape shaped by centuries of stories, from ancient monks and Viking raids to the quiet rhythms of island life today.
Once you’re on Lindisfarne, there’s plenty to explore. Wander the dramatic ruins of Lindisfarne Priory and imagine the early Christian community that once thrived here. Head out to the castle, perched proudly on a rocky outcrop with sweeping views across the coast. Or simply take your time along the shoreline paths, watching seabirds drift over tidal sands and enjoying the calm that only a remote island can offer.
The village itself is full of small treasures - cosy cafés, craft shops, and places to sample the island’s famous mead. Whether you’re visiting for the history, the scenery or the chance to enjoy somewhere truly unique, Lindisfarne offers a day out that feels both peaceful and memorable. Just make sure you keep an eye on the tide times… the sea decides when your adventure begins and ends.

There is parking available on the island. Yes - you can stay overnight in accommodation on the island or nearby on the mainland if you prefer to avoid being cut off by the tide.
You’ll find historic ruins such as the priory, a dramatic castle, shoreline walks, wildlife reserves and charming cafes and shops.
Yes - the island has cafés, pubs, shops and basic services, but because it’s remote and tidal, some facilities may be limited or subject to the tide’s schedule, so plan ahead.
Make sure you check the tide-times for safe crossing, wear sturdy footwear (especially if you’ll walk around the headland or castle), bring layers (the weather can change fast) and allow enough time to explore without worrying about missing the safe exit.
