Notting Hill Carnival is one of those events people talk about all year… then quietly complain about afterwards.
Too busy. Too loud. Too stressful.
Usually said by people who turned up late, wore the wrong shoes, had no water, no plan, and assumed it would somehow behave like a theme park.
Carnival doesn’t work like that. It rewards a bit of preparation and punishes blind optimism. Do it right, though, and it’s one of the best things London has to offer.
If you’re going with kids, Sunday is the sensible choice.
It’s still loud, colourful and full of energy, but it’s noticeably calmer than Monday. Monday is peak Carnival - incredible atmosphere, massive crowds, and not the day to discover your child doesn’t cope well with noise, heat, or being carried for long stretches.
Sunday gives you the Carnival experience without quite as much intensity. If you’re going adults-only and want the full thing, Monday delivers. Just know what you’re signing up for.
Arriving early makes a bigger difference than people realise.
Late morning is the sweet spot. You can move around more easily, actually see the floats and performers, and find toilets before queues turn into something you’d rather not think about. By mid-afternoon, everything slows down. Streets get busier, queues get longer, and even simple things start to feel like effort.
Carnival is far more enjoyable before it reaches that point.
This is not the day for new shoes. Or shoes you care about.
Comfortable trainers are essential. Light clothing helps, and layers are worth bringing - the weather can change quickly. Something will get spilled on you at some point. Accepting that early is oddly freeing.
People look amazing at Carnival, but practicality wins every time if you want to last more than a couple of hours.
The food at Carnival is genuinely excellent, but queues can be unpredictable and long. With kids especially, relying on food stalls as your main plan is risky.
Bring snacks and water so hunger doesn’t dictate your mood or your exit time. That way, when you do grab food, it’s because you want to, not because you have to. It turns a potential stress point into a highlight.
You don’t need a strict itinerary, but going in completely blind isn’t ideal either.
Knowing roughly where you’re heading, when you might leave, and how you’d regroup if you split up removes a lot of unnecessary stress. Carnival isn’t the place for vague “we’ll find each other later” plans. Signal can be patchy, crowds move slowly, and small problems escalate quickly.
A loose plan keeps the day enjoyable without killing the spontaneity.
Toilets exist, but they’re busy and not always where you want them. Using them when you see a reasonable queue — rather than waiting until it’s urgent — is one of those boring decisions that massively improves the day. Wipes and hand gel are non-negotiable.
Noise is another thing people underestimate. The sound systems are incredible and loud. For younger kids, ear defenders aren’t overkill — they’re practical. They help kids enjoy more of the day without becoming overwhelmed, which usually means you stay longer too.
Carnival isn’t about seeing everything. You won’t. And that’s fine.
Set expectations early — for kids and for yourself. It will be busy, loud, and full-on. Leaving while everyone’s still smiling is a success, even if it’s earlier than planned. Carnival isn’t something you conquer; it’s something you dip into and enjoy.
